The most essential reading comprehension skill for the ParaPro test. Learn to identify central themes, topic sentences, and supporting details.
What You'll Learn
What is a Main Idea?
The main idea is the central point or most important thought that the author wants to communicate about a topic. It's the "big picture" message that all other sentences support.
π Topic vs. Main Idea
Topic
What the passage is about (usually 1-3 words)
Examples: "Dogs," "Climate change," "School lunch"
Main Idea
What the author says about the topic (complete thought)
Examples: "Dogs make loyal pets," "Climate change affects weather patterns"
π Example: Finding the Main Idea
"Honeybees are essential to agriculture. These tiny insects pollinate over 100 crops in the United States, including apples, almonds, and blueberries. Without honeybees, many fruits and vegetables would become scarce and expensive. In fact, honeybees contribute over $15 billion to U.S. crop production each year."
Topic: Honeybees
Main Idea: Honeybees are essential to agriculture
Why? The first sentence states this directly, and all other sentences provide evidence supporting this importance.
Finding Topic Sentences
The topic sentence contains the main idea and is often (but not always) the first sentence of a paragraph. However, it can appear anywhere:
Beginning
Most common - main idea stated first
End
Details build up to conclusion
Middle

Implied
Must be inferred from details
